What are the legal requirements when getting married in Mauritius?
Before you pack your bags, you are probably aware that there are some practicalities you need to bear in mind when planning your wedding abroad.
The legal requirements for getting married in Mauritius are relatively simple and straight forward.
Two copies of the following documents are required at least 10 weeks before you depart the UK and all original documents must be taken with you to Mauritius.
- Full Birth Certificate
- 10 Year Passport with at least 6 months validity remaining
- If you are divorced – a Decree Absolute
- If you are a widower – a Death certificate and previous Marriage Certificate
- Non English documentation must be translated into English and duly stamped
- You will also need to take 2 passport photos each with you to Mauritius
We would suggest that you are in Mauritius for at least three working days before your wedding date to finalise all legal procedures locally.
The marriage of UK and Irish citizens conducted in Mauritius is legally binding under UK and Irish law.
You will be required to have a least 2 witnesses present at your marriage ceremony – these can be provided by the hotel/lodge.
You will be issued with a marriage certificate.
