What are the legal requirements when getting married in Zambia?

Before you pack your bags, you are probably aware that there are some practicalities you need to bear in mind when planning your wedding abroad.

The legal requirements for getting married in Zambia are relatively simple and straight forward.

Two copies of the following documents are required at least 10 weeks before you depart the UK and all original documents must be taken with you to Zambia.

  • Full Birth Certificate
  • 10 Year Passport with at least 6 months validity remaining
  • If you are divorced – a Decree Absolute
  • If you are a widower – a Death certificate and previous Marriage Certificate
  • If you have changed your name – a Deed Poll notice
  • If you are adopted – Adoption certificate

There are no minimum residency requirements for getting married in Zambia, but we would suggest that you are in Zambia for at least three days before your wedding date to finalise all legal procedures locally.

The marriage of UK and Irish citizens conducted in Zambia is legally binding under UK and Irish law.

You will be required to have a least 2 witnesses present at your marriage ceremony – these can be provided by the hotel/lodge.

You will be issued with a marriage certificate.

Much care and effort has been taken to ensure the information provided is correct; however this is a guideline only and should not be taken as legal advice.
